Huddersfield rugby league players quizzed over rape

Six rugby league players have been arrested after a woman was raped at a Newcastle hotel.

The men, from the Huddersfield Giants Super League squad, were staying at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel as part of a pre-season tour.

Northumbria Police said a 22-year-old woman made a complaint following an incident in the early hours of Tuesday.

The force said the men were being questioned on suspicion of rape and the inquiry was in the "early stages".

The team arrived at the hotel on Monday for a team-building exercise and training.

Huddersfield Giants managing director Richard Thewlis said there would be an internal inquiry into the allegation.

In a statement on the club's website, he said: "The club has fully co-operated with all requests made of us by the police and we are now awaiting further information from them."

They were questioned on suspicion of rape and later released on bail pending further inquiries.

The Giants had arrived at the hotel on Monday for a team-building exercise and training.

Club managing director Richard Thewlis said there would be an internal inquiry into the allegation.

In a statement on the club's website, he said: "The club appreciate that the police have a duty to thoroughly investigate all allegations of this nature.

"We will assist them in any way requested.

"The police will now gather the facts and reach their conclusions."
